Don't Underestimate The Anointing

In 2 Kings Chapter 4 a widow who is in a desperate situation approaches Elisha. Not only has she lost her husband, but he apparently left her with so much debt that the creditor is coming and she is about to lose her two sons as well.

So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” 2 Kings 4:2 NKJV

Elisha gives her instructions to borrow vessels and begin pouring her oil into them. She and her sons begin filling the borrowed vessels. The oil flows freely and she is miraculously able to fill every vessel that her sons bring her. Once the final vessel is filled, the flow of the oil stops.

When she sold the oil, not only was there enough to pay off all of her debt, but there was so much left over that she and her sons lived off the surplus.

Oil is a picture of the Holy Spirit and of His anointing in the life of a believer. Too often believers are similar to this woman in the way that they underestimate what they have in the anointing.

When Elisha asked the woman what she had she said, “nothing but a jar of oil”. You can tell by her response that she thought very little of that oil. In her mind it was completely insignificant when compared to her problem. But she would go on to see that by having that jar of oil she had everything she needed. Not only did that oil, or anointing, enable her to handle her current challenge, but also caused her to come out the other side carrying a greater blessing than she'd known before!

All she needed to do was to stop dismissing that oil as "nothing" and start letting it flow. And once that oil/anointing started to flow, the need was met. Once she stopped thinking that the oil she had wasn't significant enough to meet the challenge, and instead started using it, the burden that was weighing down on her was destroyed.

It is the same for you. When you face challenges, difficulties, attacks from the enemy, etc., if you have the Holy Spirit, you have all you need. The only chance the enemy has is to convince you not to tap into that oil. As long as this woman thought that her portion of "oil" was insignificant, she was defeated. You simply need to do what Elisha told this woman to do. Don't think little of your anointing, begin to use it. Don't dismiss your anointing, distribute it!

There is no problem that you can face that the Holy Spirit can't solve. There is no obstacle the enemy can put in your path that the Holy Spirit can't lift you over! The greater one lives in you! Take time to meditate on 1 John 4:4. Your ability to overcome is directly related to the reality that the Holy Spirit resides in you. Keep yourself aware of that reality and don't underestimate the "oil" you have.

"Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." 1 John 4:4 ESV
